Writing

“Ní Ríain has constructed a thing of sad, haunted beauty and inherent musicality. Each rapid-fire phrase pummels the air in a series of blistering crescendos, passed around the family like a choral litany. In truth it’s an elegy to their own lost lives, building to a symphony fuelled by love and anger.”-  The Glasgow Herald

‘Such delicate intensity that it feels as if the audience itself is holding its breath’ - The Irish Times

Although her formal training has primarily been in classical music as a composer and pianist, Ailís has been writing texts for several years, often incorporating these within her musical compositions.  Her first play TILT (also known as BEATEN, 2007) has received five productions in Sweden, Ireland, England, Germany and Scotland. TILT is published by Nick Hern Books. She is represented by Mel Kenyon at Casarotto Ramsay. CELL was premiered at the 24:7 Theatre Festival and transferred to the RE:Play Season at The Library Theatre, Manchester in 2010. Her third play The Tallest Man in the World is currently being read. For 2011/2012 Ailís has been selected by North West Playwrights for their Playwrights’ Mentor Scheme where she is being mentored by Nina Steiger, Director of the Writer’s Centre at London’s Soho theatre. Her new play, Desolate Heaven, was performed at Liverpool Playhouse as part of Everyword Festival in November 2011.
